Role playing sales training gives your team a safe place to rehearse the conversations that win or lose deals: the buyer who asks for a discount on the final call, the prospect comparing you with a competitor, the deal that goes quiet after a promising start. Our free pack gives you eight ready to run scenarios that follow a deal from first discovery call to renewal, so you can start practising this week without writing a single script.

  • Builds confidence before real conversations. Reps rehearse the hard moments first, so they walk into live calls prepared rather than nervous.
  • Sharpens objection handling. Practise the pushbacks your team hears most on price, timing and competition until the response comes naturally.
  • Speeds up onboarding. New starters get realistic practice from day one and reach full productivity faster.
  • Ready to run. Every scenario comes with the situation, an easier and a harder customer, a scoring guide and a customer script, so managers can run a session in minutes.

What's inside the pack

Eight scenarios, each built around a moment where deals are most often won or lost, from discovery to renewal. Here's where they take your team.

01 · Holding your price

The last-minute discount

It's the final call before signing and everything is agreed. Then the buyer asks what discount you can do if they sign today.

02 · Asking better questions

The discovery call that stays shallow

A first call where the prospect gives short answers and keeps asking to see a demo.

03 · Standing out

“Their platform does more”

A buyer arrives with a spreadsheet showing a competitor has more features for the same price.

04 · Staying credible

The technical expert

A security review where the detailed questions keep coming, and your rep can't answer them all.

05 · Helping your champion

The champion who can't sell it upstairs

Your contact loves the product, but their CFO has questioned the cost and the case is due next week.

06 · Keeping a customer

The renewal after a bad quarter

Usage is down, support has been slow and the customer is unhappy, with the renewal 60 days away.

07 · Restarting a deal

The deal that went quiet

A prospect who was keen a month ago has ignored three emails, then finally picks up the phone.

08 · Showing the value

“We'll set it up ourselves”

A buyer who's ready to sign wants to drop the onboarding package and run setup alone.

Every scenario comes with an easier and a harder version of the customer, a simple 1 to 5 scoring guide and a customer script. The detail is in the pack.

Why role playing sales training works

Sales is a performance skill. Reading a playbook tells a rep what to say; only practice teaches them how to say it when a buyer pushes back. Role playing closes that gap by letting reps make their mistakes in a session, not on a live deal.

It turns knowledge into habit.

A rep who has handled the same objection five times in practice responds calmly the sixth time, on a real call.

It shows managers where to coach.

Watching a rep work through a scenario reveals gaps a pipeline report never will.

It builds a shared standard.

When the whole team practises the same scenarios, everyone knows what a great discovery call or price conversation sounds like.

It keeps skills sharp.

Short, regular sessions stop good habits fading between quarterly training days.

The catch is consistency. Most teams run role plays once during onboarding and rarely again, because a good scenario takes time to write. That's the gap this pack fills.

How to run a sales role play session

A good session takes about 25 minutes and needs just three people.

  1. Pick a scenario and a version.

Choose the easier customer for newer reps and the harder one for experienced reps. Focus each session on a single skill, such as holding your price or asking better questions.

  2. Split into threes.

A rep, a customer and a scorer. Swap roles so everyone gets a turn selling and everyone sees the conversation from the customer's side.

  3. Run it and score it.

Spend a couple of minutes reading, then about eight talking, in real time with no pausing to restart. The scorer gives a score from 1 to 5 on each of the three things to look for.

  4. Talk it through, then try again.

Start with what worked, then one thing to change. Run the scenario once more and compare both scores.

Every scenario in the pack is written for this format, with a scoring guide and a customer script to hand.

Take it further with AI roleplay

Peer role plays are a great start, but they depend on a manager's diary and a colleague willing to play the buyer. Virti's AI roleplay removes both limits. Reps practise sales calls with a realistic AI buyer whenever they want, as often as they need, and get instant, objective feedback on every conversation.

When practice is that easy, reps choose to do more of it. In a global sales pilot, reps completed an average of 32.5 voluntary practice sessions each.

You can turn any scenario in this pack into an AI sales call simulation in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is role playing in sales training?

It's a practice method where a rep handles a realistic sales conversation with someone playing the buyer. It lets reps rehearse calls, objections and negotiations before they happen for real.

How often should sales teams role play?

Little and often works best. A 20 minute session each week builds more skill than a full day once a quarter.

Can I use sales role play scripts word for word?

Use them as a starting point, not a script to memorise. The customer script guides whoever plays the buyer, but the rep should respond in their own words, so they can adapt when a real buyer goes off script.

Are these scenarios suitable for new starters?

Yes. Every scenario has an easier and a harder version of the customer, so new starters and experienced reps can use the same pack.

How does scoring work?

The scorer rates the rep from 1 to 5 on three things to look for in each scenario. Add up the scores for each try and compare them to see progress between tries.

Is the pack free?

Yes. Fill in the form and your download starts straight away.
